“The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common. With great power the Apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great favor was accorded them all. There was no needy person among them, for those who owned property or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds of the sale, and put them at the feet of the Apostles, and they were distributed to each according to need.” ~ ACTS4:32-37

“When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tucked in his garment, for he was lightly clad, and jumped into the sea.” ~ JN21:1-14  Peter wears his heart on his sleeve.  He just expresses his emotions physically; there is no second guessing what he is thinking.  Do you express your faith in action?

In the silence, jump…

“The Lord God has given me a well-trained tongue, that I might know how to speak to the weary a word that will rouse them.” ~ IS50  My work in Spiritual Direction is mostly prayer and listening.  Before I speak, I ask the Holy Spirit to direct my words, and the one listening to be open for the Spirit’s guidance.  Often, I can see visible evidence of a shift in the person receiving.

In the silence, speak to the weary a word that will rouse them…

“Jesus went back across the Jordan to the place where John first baptized, and there he remained.  Many came to him and said, ‘John performed no sign, but everything John said about this man was true.’ And many there began to believe in him.” ~ JN10:31-42   Do you have faith in Jesus?  How have you come to believe in him?

In the silence, just believe…

“Beside restful waters the Lord leads me; the Lord refreshes my soul” ~ PS23  Lent is such a busy season for most Ministers.  I have learned to limit my time doing retreat work during Lent, even though it is the most likely time to draw a big crowd.  Setting boundaries, and making your own time for prayer, quiet, and reflection is essential to living a balanced life.  What would help you focus on your relationship with God?

“Jesus told Martha, ‘I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.’”~ JN11:1-45  We believe in the resurrection of Jesus.  This makes the whole story make sense.  Can you imagine how his close companions felt, since they did not have all the information?

In the silence, Jesus is the resurrection and the life…

“Thus says the Lord: Lo, I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; the things of the past shall not be remembered or come to mind. Instead, there shall always be rejoicing and happiness in what I create…” ~ IS65:17-21  I spent this past weekend on a silent retreat.  I embraced the stillness like a welcome friend.  At one point, in the quiet I heard a woodpecker happily pecking on a nearby tree, and envisioned God knocking on my heart, asking to enter in.  No matter where you are on your Spiritual journey, God is waiting to create something new.  In the silence, inviting God within…

“Send forth your light and your fidelity; they shall lead me on and bring me to your holy mountain, to your dwelling-place.” ~ PS43  Are you in front of God, or is God in front of you?  Who is the Leader?  During your prayer time, reflect on who is leading.

In the silence, lead me Lord…

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose hope is the Lord. He is like a tree planted beside the waters that stretches out its roots to the stream: It fears not the heat when it comes, its leaves stay green; in the year of drought it shows no distress, but still bears fruit.” ~ JER17:5-10   Are you like the tree planted beside the living water?  Is this a time of drought?

In the silence, keep close to the Lord…

“Thus says the Lord: Just as from the heavens the rain and snow come down and do not return there till they have watered the earth, making it fertile and fruitful, giving seed to the one who sows and bread to the one who eats, so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; it shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it.” ~ IS55:10-11   God has purpose and perfect timing, and it is easy to get a little impatient, when it doesn’t line up with our ideas.

In the silence, God achieves the perfect ending every time…
