“As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus gave the impression that he was going on farther. But they urged him, ‘Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.’ So he went in to stay with them. And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized Jesus, but he vanished from their sight.” ~ LK24:13-35  One of my favorite sites on pilgrimage in the Holy Land was Emmaus.  We arrived just before sunset, and walked in the garden around the Church, overlooking the hillside.  Our group experienced a calm peaceful evening as we celebrated Mass together, and our hearts were burning within us with joy.

“After this, Joseph of Arimathea, secretly a disciple of Jesus for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate if he could remove the body of Jesus. And Pilate permitted it. So he came and took his body. Nicodemus, the one who had first come to him at night, also came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes weighing about one hundred pounds. They took the body of Jesus and bound it with burial cloths along with the spices, according to the Jewish burial custom. Now in the place where he had been crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had yet been buried. So they laid Jesus there because of the Jewish preparation day; for the tomb was close by.” ~ JN18:1-19:42

“How can you believe, when you accept praise from one another and do not seek the praise that comes from the only God?” ~ JN5:31-47  It has been a hard lesson for me to learn that only feedback from God should guide me, not the good opinion of people.  Seek the praise of God, not others, and you will find the peace that surpasses understanding.

In the silence, seek God…

“…wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceable, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without inconstancy or insincerity. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace.” ~ JAS3:13-18   The wisdom from my experience as a Spiritual Director gives me insight in understanding others.  Even if I can understand the issue clearly, I wait quietly in prayer.  I am at peace, knowing God knows.

In the silence, ask for wisdom from above…

“Jonathan then spoke well of David to his father Saul” ~ 1SM18:6-9;19:1-7

Jonathan was able to mediate between these two men, and help repair their relationship.  Who can you help mend?

“During the time young Samuel was minister to the Lord under Eli, a revelation of the Lord was uncommon and vision infrequent. One day Eli was asleep in his usual place. His eyes had lately grown so weak that he could not see. The lamp of God was not yet extinguished, and Samuel was sleeping in the temple of the Lord where the ark of God was. The Lord called to Samuel, who answered, ‘Here I am’”~ 1SM3:1-10  Samuel was sleeping in the temple of the Lord.  I take that to mean he felt at home in the temple.  Do you feel comfortable and relaxed in Church?  In the silence, at home with God…

“You belong to God, children, and you have conquered them, for the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” ~ 1JN3:22-4:6  The St. Louis region was hit with a big snow storm the past two days.  Here, we were blessed with about 12 inches of the fluffy white stuff.  I have not seen one car drive down our street in the past 32 hours.  The quiet is so refreshing.  Early this morning, I drank a hot cup of coffee while looking out over the snow.  I heard the wind rushing past the house, making the siding creek.  I paused and thanked God for the beauty of the pale pink sky as the sun came up over the horizon.  Pause right now, take in a deep breath, and notice God.

“Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God” ~ IS40:1-11  Recently, I made a “comfort wisdom” list which includes the things that truly comfort me.  My list contains: a hot cup of orange spice tea, soft quilt, fuzzy socks, flowers, silence, reading Scriptures, art, and prayer.  Could you come up with some comforts to reach for when you need some extra care?

“The souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them. They seemed, in the view of the foolish, to be dead; and their passing away was thought an affliction and their going forth from us, utter destruction. But they are in peace” ~~WIS3:1-9

“Only in God be at rest, my soul, for from him comes my hope” ~ PS62  During quiet time on retreat, I stood on the deck overlooking a lake.  I was just breathing in the beauty of the sky, trees, and water all around me.  As I stood, I watched a few leaves catch the breeze and float downward.  I stretched out my hands in gratitude, and one leaf gently dropped right into my hand.

In the silence, my soul is at rest in God’s tender care…
